Ga-obliged by your further letter of the 13th instant
reference 17181/1920 I have taken careful note of the details which
you give of the dispatch which the Colonial Office has received from
the Governor of Hong Kong on the Pilotage question. Having regard
to the magnitude of the trade of the port and the prosperity of the
local Chamber of Commerce, which no doubt arises therefrom, the
Management Committee of the Guild is of opinion that the difficulty -
of which I may say we have previously been informed by one of the
pilots themselves arising so far as European pilots are concerned, in not being able to make a living on account of the small fees which are paid, could very well be put right without inflicting any great hardship upon the local shipping interests.
According to the reports which we have received there would
appear to be no doubt that the Chinese are extensively used in assisting the masters with their local knowledge in taking ships into
and out of Hong Kong, and in the opinion of the Guild,
